How futures position sizing works

Every futures contract has a point value: how many dollars one full point is worth. MNQ is $2 per point, NQ is $20, MES $5, ES $50. Your risk per contract is your stop distance in points times the point value, plus fees. Divide your max risk by that, round down, and that's your size.

Max risk $200 Contract MNQ ($2/pt) Stop 15 pts Fees $1.04 per contract Per contract = 15 × $2 + $1.04 = $31.04 Contracts = floor($200 ÷ $31.04) = 6 Real risk = 6 × $31.04 = $186.24

FAQ

How many MNQ contracts equal one NQ?

Ten. MNQ is the micro version of NQ and is worth $2 per point, while NQ is worth $20 per point. The same goes for MES and ES ($5 vs $50).

Should I include fees in my risk?

Yes. Commissions are charged on every contract, win or lose. On micros they can be a big share of a small stop, so the calculator adds them to your risk per contract.

What is 1R?

1R is the amount you risk on a trade. A 2R target means aiming to make twice what you risk. Tracking results in R makes trades with different sizes comparable.

Is this financial advice?

No. It's a calculator. Always check contract specs and your firm's position limits.
